Some people call me the Cape Town ambassador, others call me the Cape Town concierge, they are all correct. When it comes to what’s cool and happening in Cape Town, I’m the one with my finger on the pulse. I write about the various things I do and I review events and restaurants, all on my blog www.relax-with-dax.co.za, and now I’ll be posting some insider info right here on Jetsetextra.com.

I believe that Cape Town is the best city in the world for people who want to enjoy life. If you want to work too hard or collect stamps, there are probably better cities for you. Cape Town has so much to offer there is no time to sit around watching TV or being bored. From fun activities like wine tasting and concerts in the botanic gardens, to more strenuous activities like climbing the mountain or participating in one of the many sport events, Cape Town has something for everyone and it’s all reasonably priced.

We have fantastic restaurants, vibey festivals and amazing bands. Have I got your attention yet? Good, because I’m off to the beach. See you soon.

Most people come to Cape Town for what the city and its immediate surrounds have to offer. You can’t hold that against them because Cape Town does have a lot to offer. But what many people don’t know is that there is a gamut of unique and inspiring experiences waiting for the traveler who breaks away from the standard itinerary and spends some time a few hours outside the city. The L'Ormarins Queen's Plate race in Cape Town.

The L'Ormarins Queen's Plate race in Cape Town.

For those looking for something a little different in Cape Town, an event which is fun and also embraced by the locals, a day at the races could be your thing. What is it about attending the races that is so appealing? Is it the magnificent horses? Maybe it’s the little adrenaline rush you get as you watch the horse you backed charge toward the finish line. Maybe it’s being surrounded by crowds of people all dressed up and having a good time. Or perhaps it’s the great after party where the ties and jackets come off and everyone parties till late. I’m sure it helps that race days only happen a few times a year. Whatever the reasons, there’s no denying that a day at the races makes for a fabulous time. Continue reading

Crime

I’m starting with this one because I’m sure it’s on most peoples’ minds. Let me begin by saying that I have been living in Cape Town for over 10 years and have not been a victim of crime. When people watch the news or read articles about South Africa, they get the impression that crime is rampant and you aren’t safe anywhere, this is not correct. Continue reading

Nelson's Column at the Spier Contemporary

Nelson's Column at the Spier Contemporary

Cape Town is the hub of the art and design scene in South Africa. In February every year, Cape Town hosts the Design Indaba which is considered to be one of the best design events in the world. I attended the Design Indaba Expo this year and was absolutely blown away by the talent on show.

On the art side, most of our professional or even up and coming artists in South Africa choose to live in Cape Town. Even the internationally well known artist, Vladimir Tretchikoff, made Cape Town his home for most of his life. For those that are interested in South African art, there are many galleries around town. Click here for a listing of the galleries in Cape Town.

A Concert at Kirstenbosch Gardens, Cape Town

A Concert at Kirstenbosch Gardens, Cape Town

The Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden in Cape Town is acclaimed as one of the great botanical gardens of the world and of those few can match the setting of Kirstenbosch because it is nestled at the foot of Table Mountain. The mountain creates an amazing backdrop and also influences the climate in the garden. Keen walkers and hikers can climb Table Mountain using two routes which start in the garden, Nursery Ravine and Skeleton Gorge (not as scary as it sounds but always go in a group as there have been muggings). Kirstenbosch normally submits an entry to the Chelsea Flower Show in London and has won several medals. Continue reading
