Chopped 'cue and slaw flanked by hush puppies and pork skins

Chopped 'cue and slaw flanked by hush puppies and pork skins

Oh, the sweet and sour sacredness of Lexington-style barbecue! Forget the sloppy sauced stuff from out West that ends up as much on your lap as on your waistline. This North Carolina speciality, celebrated annually at The Barbecue Festival of North Carolina, is the refined lady of this nation’s sprawling barbecue family. (The pork skins also pictured above, however, are another story.) Continue reading

The Crow's Nest Inn and Restaurant

The Crow's Nest Inn and Restaurant

What is the point of a new bikini, really, if one is going to gorge on the great eats of Montauk, NY and grow ripples of flab? Thus the joy of visiting a beach town in the early fall. So many flowy cover-ups to hide your excesses! So much food to suck down with the sweet salt air! Continue reading

Montauk after Labor Day

Montauk after Labor Day

Montauk after Labor Day is like the $1 Oyster Happy Hour at local palate palace South Edison: briny, simple and divine.

Sure, as of this weekend, there are still hour-long Friday/Saturday waits for dinner at the best of the best. But for the most part, the see-and-be-seen weekenders who heart Long Island’s easternmost point have abandoned their beach bags for designer fall boots back in New York City. What they’ve left behind is the down-to-earth elegance that makes this place the well-heeled, surfer-hunk cousin of the more high-maintenance Hamptons just down Route 27. I’ve had a crush on this guy for over a decade now…my endless summer romance! Continue reading

The RedBury - a boutique hotel at the corner of Hollywood and Vine in Los Angeles

The RedBury - a boutique hotel at the corner of Hollywood and Vine in Los Angeles

Don’t get me wrong. I love me a fancy hotel room with a recessed TV in the bathroom mirror, a phone that checks flights/email/weather, an oblong robot who cooks fried chicken on demand (erm, okay, here’s hoping someone is working on that last bit). But sometimes, I like a fancy hotel room that doesn’t leave me staring baffled into a screen of buttons, a place that evokes the simpler times and vibes I desperately crave when traveling. Groovin' in the grotto of Xplor, Playa del Carmen

Groovin' in the grotto of Xplor, Playa del Carmen

Why yes, that’s me, hand paddling a raft along a glowing underground grotto of real stalactites and stalagmites. And sadly, no, you can’t see my burning triceps (get me an oar!) nor the paddle-challenged dude in front of me who steered himself into the wall, causing an in-cave traffic jam. Continue reading

Loveless Cafe's Fried Chicken...nomnomnom...

Loveless Cafe's Fried Chicken...nomnomnom...

You may recall that I possess a drooling obsession with ladylike enjoyment of fried chicken. So imagine my beast-like frenzy pleasure at getting to visit Nashville, TN”s southern famous food fortress, Loveless Cafe and Motel. Loveless has served up staples like chicken, ham and biscuits for over 50 years and has seduced countless palates. Loveless? After my “family style” all-you-can-eat chowdown, I may be in love… Continue reading

Exuma Bahama Cay

Exuma Bahama Cay One of Exuma's 360+ little isles...

Tropics of Wonder!

I recently visited the Exuma district of the Bahamas, a collection of over 360 divine little islands dotted with towering palm trees and soft white sand. In Exuma, the water is clearer (and more divine) than an icy martini. While there, tour company Island Routes hooked me up with seafaring father/son team of Ray and Justin Lightbourne of Exuma Water Sports. Stunning sites (and mom’s intoxicating , uh literally, rum cake) ensued. Continue reading

Taos Ski Valley: My Instructor Gives A Thumbs-Up To The Bunny (?!) Hill

Taos Ski Valley: My Instructor Gives A Thumbs-Up To The Bunny (?!) Hill

As spring melts away snow-kissed winter dreams, I’d like to give my love to Taos Ski Valley in New Mexico. This is a beautiful, advanced mountain with heart-stopping steeps and a lots of juicy hike-to terrain. Traditionally a skier’s spot, Taos Ski Valley only opened to snowboarders at the end of last season. So it was interesting to see what riding vibe it held (very mellow, as the riders are just grateful to be included). Even on skis, I couldn’t brave the insane plunges. So instead, I strapped into my board to learn to ride, Taos style. Continue reading

Red River Ski

Red River Ski

The once-mining town of Red River, New Mexico still evokes a rough-n-tumble past of gold-diggin’ prospectors and trappers in coonskin caps. It’s rugged and tiny, with a population of roughly 450, and therein lies the magic of the ski and snowboard experience at Red River’s core. A true ski-in/ski-out town, Red River Ski Area skips the pomp and production of  mega resorts and offers a humble and efficient family mountain that glows with charm and retro fun. Sure, some of its retro elements border on kitsch, but who cares? It’s groovy! Continue reading

Broasted Chicken Dinner

After a day (who am I kidding…after an hour!) of shredding the slopes at Angel Fire Resort, my mind, body and soul all craved serious eats. Sure, I could have gone for the typical mountain burger or chili fare that always sticks to your ribs (mmmm, ribs), but instead went off the packed powder path and chowed down in The Lodge.

My taste buds are still thanking me.
