Cadiz restaurant in downtown Santa Barbara

Cadiz restaurant in downtown Santa Barbara

Cadiz is the most buzzed about new restaurant on Santa Barbara’s dining scene. Granted they are just in a “soft opening” phase right now, having only been open two weeks, but I think it’s safe to voice a prediction that they will be here to stay. Continue reading

Restorative yoga, SOMA Get Fit Spring Nurturing Retreat

‘Tis the season of renewal! My friends at SOMA Get Fit invited me to experience their Spring Nurturing Retreat, and nurturing and rejuvenating it was. SOMA (Sustainable Outdoor Momentous Adventures) was created by health and fitness guru Scott Crawford, who offers customized fitness and wellness experiences incorporating Santa Barbara’s natural assets. Those assets extend beyond the mountains and the sea to include a team of 15 specialized practitioners in areas such as yoga, massage and nutrition. Continue reading

DIANI Boutique, Santa Barbara

DIANI Boutique, Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara has a stellar selection of shops for a wee town of 90,000. Women’s clothing is my area of expertise/addiction when it comes to shopping, so I’d like to take this opportunity to share some of my favorite retail haunts with my fellow shoppers out there. Continue reading

Santa Barbara is best known for the elements that are enjoyed in the light of day — the sea, beaches, mountains, gardens, parks, etc. Our nightlife scene might be relatively mellow (unless you’re a college student), but if you know where to go there’s plenty of good fun to be had at night. Here’s a rundown of 21 places to go and things to do after dark. Continue reading

PhoCusWright recently released a study that demonstrates how experiences drive travelers to destinations — more so than, say, a specific hotel or a great deal. Yes, all of that comes into play at some point in the decision making and planning process. Yet, it’s what you can do in a vacation destination that truly woos. According to Viator.com, today’s travelers are “looking for extraordinary experience-driven activities.” People, we’ve got you covered. There’s no shortage of extraordinary experiences here in Santa Barbara. Try these on for size: Continue reading

I recently attended a preview of the Charles Garabedian:  A Retrospective exhibition at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, which will be on view through April 17. It was an absolute delight to have the artist himself on site to guide us through his works that SBMA Curator of Contemporary Art, Julie Joyce, selected for the exhibition. “Chuck,” as Ms. Joyce referred to Mr. Garabedian, shared insights – often humorous and self-deprecating – on the subject matter of the paintings, his process and inspirations.

The Supply Room boutique at The Presidio Motel

The Supply Room boutique at The Presidio Motel

Santa Barbara is rarely defined as “hip” but I think my fellow residents and visitors in the 25-35 age range would agree that there is indeed a “cool” side. You’ve just got to know where to go. So let’s remedy that! For the record, the term “hipster” is not meant to have the negative connotation it often implies. I just don’t know another label for this demographic/psychographic, which BTW absolutely includes people over 35, too! I’m thinking of the young at heart, people interested in art, music and pop culture. Stylish and tech-savvy, creative-minded and free-spirited. You get the idea. If this is you, here’s where you can find your people and what’s “cool” in Santa Barbara. (Skinny jeans optional.) Continue reading

Santa Barbara Adventure Co. Tasty Cupcake & Wine Tour

Santa Barbara is definitely not immune to the cupcake craze that has taken over the nation. Three local cupcakeries, Crushcakes, Whodidily and Enjoy Cupcakes, satisfy sweet teeth with their scrumptious and innovative flavors. Crushcakes and Whodidily were both recently featured in different episodes of the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars”. Continue reading

Trailer camping is so “right now”. It makes perfect sense, with travelers seeking authentic experiences, revisiting classic “old-school” ideas and in the market for creative, budget-friendly vacations. It’s also the perfect solution for those who like the idea of camping but don’t want to “rough it”. Continue reading

BlackBerry Snapshot of Thom Yorke & Co. at Santa Barbara Bowl April 17

BlackBerry Snapshot of Thom Yorke & Co. at Santa Barbara Bowl April 17

The Santa Barbara Bowl’s 2010 season is off to a rocking good start.

I was one of the lucky 4,565 Thom Yorke fans to have a ticket for his sold-out Atoms for Peace gig at the Santa Barbara Bowl, last Saturday. Ah-mazing! I can’t gush enough about how spectacular of a venue the Bowl is for live music, or how crazy talented Thom Yorke is, for that matter. (My friend Russ Spencer produced a documentary “Backstage at the Bowl” that captures the essence of the Bowl’s fabulousness perfectly, through interviews with artists who performed during the 2004 season.) And 4/17 was no exception. Fans—some who traveled from as far away as New York—definitely got their money and air miles worth! And were probably surprised at how easy the concert-going process is in Santa Barbara—the perks of small town living! Continue reading
