Kenya, Africa
Jetset Extra visits with Kenya-based artist Geraldine Robarts, whose vibrant, brilliantly colored paintings are favorites of locals and tourists alike. Robarts' parents and grandparents were artists of one stripe or another, so she grew up with pencil and brush in hand, but it was her Baha'i faith and love of Kenyan culture that inspired such authentic, powerful works of art. Geraldine currently works with the local community to encourage others to turn traditional Masai arts and crafts into important sources of revenue.
Jetset Extra visits the Tribe Hotel and interviews Mark Somen, general manager, and Luca Molteni, executive chef at Tribe's Jiko Restaurant. The Tribe is a 137-room boutique hotel that caters to visitors who are in Kenya on safari. It features and more than 800 pieces of original African art that draws in locals and visitors alike, but the hotel's biggest draw is its exceptional restaurant, Jiko. Named after the Kenyan word for oven, Jiko is known for its unique cooking techniques that provide customers with a juicy, evenly-cooked cut of meat every time.
At Richard's Camp in the Masai Mara in Kenya, guests have the opportunity to experience the real Africa: days of heart-stopping game viewing, evenings enjoying cocktails by a cozy campfire, and delicious three-course meals under an awe-inspiring canopy of stars. All of the land belongs to the Masai, who earn more from eco-tourism than agriculture. Game drives give visitors an opportunity to see abundant wildlife, including elephants, lions, cheetah, leopard, wild dog, and giraffe from the ground and in the air.
Jetset Extra interviews Tony and Rose Dyer of the Borana Ranch and Safari Lodge in Kenya. The Borana experience includes luxurious accommodations, horseback riding, and exciting game drives. The sumptuous rooms are all unique and the views stretch for miles. Venture to this working cattle ranch and you could see lions, elephants, giraffes, water buffalo, and kudu. There are more than 60 types of mammals on the ranch and more than 70 varieties of trees.
